The final lecture in the Bishop's Course in Theology
The final lecture in the Bishop’s Course in Theology was a public event that took place in St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral on Saturday 3rd March. The Most Rev’d. Dr. Barry Morgan, Archbishop of Wales, Bishop of Llandaff and Member of the Lambeth Commission, came to Cork to give the lecture which was entitled ‘Scripture and Sexuality: Our Commitment to Listening and Learning’. Archbishop Morgan has worked in a range of ministerial contexts – in parish ministry, as a university and theological college lecturer, a university chaplain, as an archdeacon, a director of ordinands and as a continuing ministerial education officer. He follows in a long line of distinguished persons who have addressed the participants of the Bishop’s Course.
The Bishop’s Course in Theology has been running since 2000. During that time many diverse people have found their lives enriched by the fellowship and discussion of the course. The graduation ceremony for the Bishop’s Course was held at the lecture and there were eight graduands: Sarah Attridge, Sylvia Helen, Olivia Fitzpatrick, Karen Ferguson, Helen Lovell, Emily Beamish, Kate Neilson and Ian Coombes.
Archbishop Morgan’s lecture stimulated a range of questions, and some of the questioners disagreed emphatically with the content of the lecture. For many people, a great deal of debate and discussion was sparked by the evening, but this is what the Bishop’s Course in Theology is all about – not just an evening lecture and discussion, but an influence that permeates into many aspects of the participants’ every day lives.
