New Church of Ireland Dean of Cork

On Saturday 6th January – the Feast of the Epiphany - the Right Reverend Paul Colton, Bishop of Cork appointed a new Dean of Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork.

The new Dean is the Very Reverend Nigel Dunne who is currently Rector of Bandon Union of parishes.

The Very Reverend Nigel Dunne is originally from Kildare and is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin (including the Church of Ireland Theological College and the Irish School of Ecumenics) with a Moderatorship in Biblical Studies and Theology (1988), Bachelor of Theology (1990), Master ion Philosophy (Ecumenics) and Master in Arts (2001). 

The new Dean of Cork was made Deacon in 1990 and ordained Priest in 1991 in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin and served as curate-assistant of St. Bartholomew’s and Christ Church Leeson Park and part time chaplain to the Dublin Institute of Technology between 1990 and 1993.  He then served as curate-assistant in Taney Parish (Dublin) from 1993 to 1995 when he moved to be Rector of Blessington until 2003.   He was a Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin from 2001 until his nomination as Rector of Bandon Union of Parishes in January 2003.

Dean Dunne has a particular interest in ecumenism both at local and national level and is currently Secretary of the Church of Ireland/Methodist Church in Ireland Covenant Council.  He has been involved in many local ecumenical initiatives over the years and firmly believes that local dialogue is the essential foundation for wider dialogue. He is also passionate about liturgical development and is known for his commitment to the deepening of faith through the very best liturgical material available. He is also very interested in adult education and has taught on a Diploma Course in Tallaght and was involved (with the Diocesan Healing and Pastoral Care Committee) in the drawing up of the new Bishop’s Course in Pastoral Care which was launched last year.  He is also Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of Cork.

He is married to Isobel who works part time and is currently studying for a degree in Sociology and Psychology in University College Cork, and they have two children Jeffrey (8) and Andrew (6).

“I am honoured to be appointed to this post, and while regretting having to leave Bandon after a relatively short time, I’m looking forward to a very different ministry in Saint Fin Barre’s in Cork City”

Bishop Colton said:

“I am delighted that Dean Dunne has accepted this appointment and have no doubt that he will bring significant gifts to Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral and the Cathedral Parish.”
