CAPE CLEAR 2008
Cape Clear: 4th – 6th July 2008
We set sail from Schull at 4.30 on Friday evening. The sea was wild and quite scary but we made it safe and sound. That night we played ice-breaker games and competed in team challenges which were enjoyed by all. Carolyn, our chef, was very busy preparing dinner as this year we were left to our own devices as opposed to the other years when we went to the restaurant. Everyone pitched in though and it ran very smoothly. That night our speaker, Daniel Owen, discussed why we need Jesus. He spoke with relevancy and humor and we all enjoyed the talk. We had group time afterward and it was clear by the feedback that Daniel had provoked interest in all the participants.
Saturday was activity day. Daniel spoke again in the morning about why we need the bible. The rest of the day was concentrated on outdoor activities and luckily we had fine weather for the most part! We did kayaking, snorkeling and sea bouldering and for those not brave enough to face the ice cold Cape Clear water there were team games! Saturday evening Daniel spoke on the topic, why do we pray, which sparked some discussion between the participants in group time.
Saturday night was “Shrek Night”! Everyone got into costume and had to model! There was every character imaginable from The Gingerbread Man to Robin Hood to Little Red Riding Hood to the Swamp. We were judged on the creativity and originality and vibrancy of our costumes. It was a close call decided by a Swingometer which Judy informs us was how it was done back in her day!
It was a fantastic night and I don’t think you could find one person to disagree. We sang all the songs from Shrek and everyone danced and sang along.
Sunday came with sunshine which was lovely. We had our last session with Daniel in the morning along with communion. We were then told we were doing drama skits and each team was given a scenario which they were to act out. We did the skits after lunch with involved chicken farmers, to contagious diseases to trained caterpillars! Everyone put a huge effort into it and it was a great success!
5.30 was home time and we set off from Cape Clear into a much calmer sea! Spirits were high and songs were sung on the return journey! Everyone had a wonderful time and made new friends. And even though it rained a lot of the time we didn’t care.
Well maybe just a little!
