Youth Leaders Weekend

18th- 20th January 2008

This year CDYC in partnership with CIYD brought a group of both leaders and young aspiring leaders to Muckross, Killarney for a weekend jammed packed with workshops, fellowship, ‘craic’ and some serious sleep deprivation!

The weekend began on Friday evening with everyone arriving at the Muckross Youth Hostel. We were firmly told to come prepared with an armour of warm clothes, as the venue was legendary for being cold! However, this turned out to be not the case. Ben Johnson provided much amusement with the tale of his ‘87 Honda Civic which broke down on the way to Killarney! The atmosphere was buzzing with anticipation for what the weekend would have in store.

The weekend’s programme was based around workshop sessions, guided by Sue Pearmain of the YMCA that were both innovative and challenging to both the well trained youth leader and the new fledglings. Opportunity was given for the expression of thoughts and ideas on encouraging youth and understanding the needs and wants of today. The workshops involved the mix of media, music, personal stories and group discussions. One highlight of the weekend for me was the workshop led by Mark Dunwoody and Carolyn Smith. They led a session for the under 18’s outlining the background and basics of youth work. Outside of the workshops, time was given over to relaxing and allowing everyone the opportunity to get to know one another.

I found that it was an exciting and stimulating weekend. I was stunned by the leaders’ range of knowledge and skill. We are blessed to have such extraordinary group leaders! I would like to thank  Judy Peters, Mark Dunwoody, Sue Pearmain and all others involved for making it truly unforgettable weekend!
