Surf’s Up 2007
The Surf’s Up weekend at the beginning of November, although predicted to freeze us of our enthusiasm, was awesome as described by Ben (the American(!) Youth worker) and was a great time of fellowship. These days we (the leaders) love our aesthetics, and Rosscarbery Hall was turned into a real chilled-out surf haven. Fruitails, Hawaiian garlands and Chinese kicked off a night of mad games, learning about different surf techniques, surfing the console, surf lingo quiz and mattress surfing. Ben’s talk centred around the theme of Surfing the Christian Life. He read a passage from Isaiah “For I AM the Lord your God, who stirs up the seas and the waves roar the Lord of hosts is His name” (NASB), how apt and how true! When you are out on the waves, you can’t but realise the awesomeness of the creator. This is, in essence, what we seek to do on our different camps; to help young people make the connection between the bible and real life. Later on, we watched a movie called Blue Crush and sipped hot chocolate with tonnes of cream. The Following morning, the group went for an early morning walk and came back for breakfast comprising of pancakes, rashers and maple syrup (scrum-delicious!). Afterwards we headed down to Inchydoney, had surf lessons and caught as many waves as we could. Some stood, some fell off, and some ate sand! Eventually, tired and exhilarated we headed up to the Dunwoody’s house to defrost and be fed! A great two days were had!
